“Don't let life harden your heart.” —Pema Chödroön

When we're low on energy and inspiration, we often reach for the very things that drain us. Embracing the uplifted discipline of our spiritual practices can create a foundation for experiencing cheerfulness.

Joy in Everyday Life
is a 5-week course exploring the meaning of joy and the true source of personal energy and inspiration. The course introduces the experience of awakening our heart and extending loving-kindness to others as a means to continuous personal inspiration. This cheerful, perky energy provides the ground for going forward on our journey with a genuine, sustainable enjoyment of life.

This course also explores the Mahayana Buddhist teachings on compassion, as well as qualities of cheerfulness, health, and freedom from doubt—symbolized by the snow lion. By training in virtue and compassion we can cultivate a gentle and fearless heart, and with cheerful discipline we can rouse energy and joy in our life.

Class Topics

In Joy in Everyday Life, we'll work directly with the following topics through instruction, meditation, and discussion:

Class 1: Introducing Joy

Class 2: Awakened Heart

Class 3: The Trap of Doubt

Class 4: Compassion in Action: The Paramitas

Class 5: Discipline and the Virtues of the Higher Realms

This 5-week course is the third in the “Everyday Life” series of the Way of Shambhala path of training. The course includes guided meditation, talks, and open discussion of the challenges that meditators face in their practice.

We encourage
Joy in Everyday Life participants to also take Warrior in the World: Shambhala Training Level III, a companion weekend workshop to this program.
